Slowly Getting There

I am plugging along. I am not moving as fast as I was hoping for but I am getting to the goal. I have to admit two things:

- I like to walk more outdoors then indoors
- I like walking in warm weather over cold weather

Anyways, here were the totals for last week that finished last night:

Sunday – 20,711
Monday – 22,916
Tuesday – 24,264
Wednesday – 28,731
Thursday – 18,434
Friday – 17,114
Saturday – 15,644

Total = 147,814 ………. 72 miles

Here is where I "walked" last week:

Here is my walk back "update":

Last Week

Last week was definitely my "weakest" week in the walking department. With the weather being colder and my wife having a rough week - including surgery - it is not surprising.

This week is not going to be good as well with the weather and Thanksgiving (out of town). When I get back into town, I need to get out my winter clothes and I need to get a membership at the track (Gault).

Here are the totals from this past week:
Sunday: 16,120
Monday: 18,237
Tuesday: 18,986
Wednesday: 15,089
Thursday: 15,277
Friday: 12,934
Saturday: 7,625

Total: 104,268 steps = 51 miles

Week 9: Recap

Well, I did get back up over the 100 mile mark for the week, but I did not really make up any miles. I did have a high total for a single day during this week and that was on Tuesday. But, the high day was "for not" in the sense that it did not push my week total that high.

Here are the week totoals:

Sunday – 24,738
Monday – 21,964
Tuesday – 75,176
Wednesday – 23,684
Thursday – 29,271
Friday – 15,116
Saturday – 18,277

Total = 212,226 ………. 104 miles

Week 9 Walk

Total Journey

Sunday, November 9, 2008

Sunday – 15,495
Monday – 35,260
Tuesday – 21,739
Wednesday – 33,762
Thursday – 14,995
Friday – 21,245
Saturday – 11,722

Total = 154,218 ………. 75 miles

75 miles for the week is the lowest total so far. I knew that this week was going to be low. I am still in Alabama. I am near the Eutaw, Al exit.

As mentioned earlier, I am going to set a goal and make it this upcoming next week.

Week 8 Totals

Sandersville, Ms is going to be my goal. To get there, I elieve that I will need to walk 113 miles which will be a few miles over my highest toal. I think a back-bac, lowest/highest will be appropriate.

A Slow Week

Overall, this week seems to be a slow week. To be honest though, I have not added my numbers daily and I have not even projected a place where I was hoping to get to.

Next week, I am going to have to change that. I am going to set a goal and get to that goal. Tomorrow, I will post the results and upload the maps.

In Alabama

It has been awhile since I have signed into this blog. I apologize for that. Week 6 was one of my least traveled weeks. The schedule was hectic with church work and the weather was not the greatest. But, I did push enough to get into Alabama.

Week 6 was 80 miles. Below are two pictures. One is for week 6 and the other is for the entire 6 weeks.

Week 6

The Complete Journey

This past week (week 7) has been a good week thus far for me on the walking side. However, I am not sure how tomorrow and Saturday will play out. There are a lot of the things on the calendar. We will see. I am hoping to get to/through the south side of Birmingham.

In case anyone was wondering, it is almost time for the new shoes. I have put approx 650 miles on these and they are wearing out.

Out of Kentucky

It took awhile but I am finally out of Kentucky. This past week was a good walking week. I was back up to my average. It does amaze me at the step total fo each week and how they differ greatly depending on what is occurring on the calendar.

Here are the step totals for last week:

Sunday – 13,261
Monday – 41,137
Tuesday – 35,876
Wednesday – 35,212
Thursday – 20,240
Friday – 37,289
Saturday – 17,109

Total = 200,124 ………. 100 miles

Last week, I left Park City, Kentucky and I arrived in Brentwood, Tn. Below are two pictures of the map. The first one is the walk for this week and the second is the walk for the last five weeks. If you click on the map, a larger pic of it will show.

Week 4: Update

This past week was my "lowest" total and it was the lowest by a great deal. I was still able to do 77 miles which I know that most would consider great, but for me, I did not feel like it was an accomplishment.

My week was a little more hectic and stressful which resulted in few walks. Here are the step totals for the week:

Sunday: 18,280 steps
Monday: 22,004 steps
Tuesday: 34,761 steps
Wednesday: 13,647 steps
Thursday: 38,209 steps
Friday: 4,317 steps
Saturday: 27,272 steps

Total = 158,490 steps ………. 77 miles

Below are two maps. The first one will be the map of this weeks journey and the second one will be the 4-week journey.

Hopefully, I will get in better step totals this week and progress on my journey quite nicely.

Brooks, Kentucky

I made it to Brooks, Kentucky. Most of us probably have never heard of Brooks. If I was doing the actual walk-through, I would tell you a little about the town/city. But, alas, all I can tell you is that it is south of Louisville.

This past week, I walked 108 miles. It has been pretty consistent thus far. The totals for the first three weeks have been 107, 105 and 108.

Here are the pictures of the two maps from this week. One is from Covington, Ky to Brooks, Ky and the other one is the first three weeks of my trip:

** if you want the image a little bigger, click on the map **

Unless, I decide to walk a great distance this week ( and 108 is not ), I will remain in Kentucky for this week. The schedule is a little busy this week, thus I am shooting for Bowling Green. We shall see.

Injury Report

When I began the journey, I was hoping and praying that I would not occur a major injury and have to "drop out" or "delay" the walk. This week, I have two minor "injuries". However, they have not caused me to stop. There has been slight discomfort though.

Our beast (big dog) caused the first one. I shot out of bed at 4 am on Tuesday morning to begin the walk and when I went to turn the alarm off, I stepped on the unexpectant dog and my ankle turned a bit. Thankfully, after walking and shaking it for about 15 mins., the pain went away.

The second one is still there and very nagging. I have a small cut on the back of my heel. I am not sure if it is more pain, discomfort or .....

Anyhow, this week has been pretty good. I got off to a slow start with me being in Illinois on Sunday and Monday BUT I made most of my steps up and with a big day tomorrow of walking, I should hit my target. Thus, on Sunday morning, I will announce how far, I went this week and where I am at.

Have a great day and once again, thank you for sponsoring me.

I am now in Covington, Kentucky. Last week, I walked 215,212 steps which amounts to approx. 105 miles. So, with that amount, I walked from Grove City, Ohio to Covington, Kentucky.

Last week was a "peak" week for me walking. I had some high step totals and I had some low step totals. Here is how the week broke down:

Sunday - 13,811
Monday - 50,175
Tuesday - 35,011
Wednesday - 20,424
Thursday - 45,762
Friday - 21,917

On The Back: More Info

2009 ELCA National Gathering: “Big Easy”
Jesus Justice Jazz, the theme for the 2009 ELCA Youth Gathering, draws from the rich faith history, diverse cultures, and arts of New Orleans. It will stretch our understanding of what it means to live in relationship and service with each other in the manner of Christ... for life... wherever we are!

The Gathering program will be different than Gatherings before. Planning teams are working with local congregations and organizations, young people, and the city to pay attention to what makes the city of New Orleans unique, as well as better understanding the changes it is going through as the entire Gulf Coast region continues to recover after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The focus will be on service and justice as we live our shared reality as Christians: Marked with the cross of Christ forever, we are claimed, gathered, and sent for the sake of the world.
What remains the same about the Gathering is that youth and adults are immersed in worship, music, Bible study, service, learning, play, prayer, the witness of faithful leaders from around the world, reflection, caring for others, and new friendships. The Gathering is a time of change and growth because we gather in the presence of God's Spirit with others who journey with Jesus
How do You Desire to Make a Difference?

In the 2009 Gathering, all participants will be invited into a Jesus Justice Jazz journey, with three specially crafted days or times of:

• discovering our deep gifts and callings (Jesus),
• deep serving which leans toward justice (Justice), and
• deep and delightful improvising/playing/imagining (Jazz)
of life with Jesus, for Justice!

The Walk Has Begun

Yesterday was my first day out walking. I want to thank those who have chosen to "sponsor" me in the walk and I hope that over the next few weeks, more people will be willing/able to sponsor the walk. The money raised will greatly benefit our team as we head to New Orleans for our servanthood event.

I wanted to start the journey off with a great start, thus I "pushed" myself a little with a early morning walk (4 am) and finished the day with about 19 miles under my belt.

The blog will be updated once or twice a week. We will give the weekly update and upload the map to give a visual. Have a great day.

The Journey

Here is a "test" page for me. I am trying to figure out the best program and photo shop of my journey and I think (emphasis on think) that this might be the best option:

Each week, I am going to "add the destination" of where I would be. Thus, "A" will be Wooster, Ohio and "B" will be week 1, "C" will be Week 2 and so forth ......

If you click on the map, it will enlarge

The journey begins in 4 days. We register for the convention in 4 days as well. Of course registration is at 1:01 am ET

The Map

Wooster, Ohio is in the northeastern section of Ohio and Big Easy (New Orleans) is in the boot of Louisiana. The journey is 1,006 miles each way. Thus, the round trip will be 2012 miles. I am going to begin the journey (keeping track of the trek) on Sunday, September 14th.

I am hoping that I can locate a tracking map program to give updates. At the very least, I will be marking how many miles I have walked and what town/state I would be in if I am making the actual walk.

My goal is to walk there and back in 6 motnhs. We will see how it goes.

Would you consider "sponsoring" or "making a pledge" to the walking cause.

My walk to New Orleans begins in 5 days. Please follow me on my journey. This blog page will be updated with the walk, Gathering News, and information regarding youth and the trip.

Thanks,
Jeff
